Research & Development
ALMEE places Research and Development (R&D) at the heart of its mission to advance sustainable energy and environmental solutions in Lebanon and across the Mediterranean. For over three decades, ALMEE has been a knowledge hub and innovation catalyst, leading studies, pilot projects, and international collaborations aimed at developing practical, science-based responses to the challenges of energy transition, climate change, and resource management.
R&D activities at ALMEE are driven by a clear vision: to generate applied research that bridges the gap between theory and implementation, enabling evidence-based policies, technological innovation, and capacity building across the public and private sectors.
Through its Ecological Transition & Climate Action program, ALMEE works with municipalities, institutions, and international partners to design and implement integrated strategies that reduce greenhouse gas emissions, improve resource efficiency, and strengthen community resilience to environmental challenges.
Key priorities include:
ALMEE’s approach is holistic and participatory — empowering communities to become key actors in the fight against climate change, while ensuring that environmental sustainability also creates economic opportunities, green jobs, and social well-being.
01
MEETMED Phase II – Mitigation ENABLING Energy Transition in the Mediterranean Region (2021–2025)
ALMEE contributes to R&D components of this EU-funded initiative by developing data-driven tools and platforms—including GREEN BOOCC GRASSMed, an online training and certification system for sustainable buildings. The project promotes applied research in energy transition, harmonized policy design, and regional knowledge exchange.
02
EE Indicators for Mediterranean Countries Project
In partnership with MEDENER and supported by ADEME (France), ALMEE developed energy and GHG databases and a national indicator system to monitor Lebanon’s energy performance. This pioneering work laid the foundation for Lebanon’s first energy efficiency and CO₂ emission indicators, broken down by sector and activity.
03
Development of Regulatory and Fiscal Instruments for Green Buildings (2022)
Commissioned by LGBC, this study proposed a strategic roadmap and evidence-based policy recommendations to encourage green building certification in Lebanon, promoting innovation in sustainable construction and local circular economy solutions.
04
ENEPLAN – Developing Skills in Integrated Energy Planning in Mediterranean Landscapes (EU Erasmus+ Project)
This project focused on advancing academic research and education in integrated energy planning, developing collaborative tools like Concept Maps as open educational resources (OERs) to enhance interdisciplinary research and cooperation across Mediterranean higher education institutions.
05
RESSOL-MEDBUILD Project (EU FP7)
Through this initiative, ALMEE participated in high-level research on solar energy technologies and their integration into the Mediterranean building sector. The project supported scientific collaboration and influenced national renewable energy and efficiency policies.
06
MED-ALGAE Project – Biodiesel Production from Microalgae (ENPI-CBCMED Program)
ALMEE contributed to R&D on biofuel production technologies using microalgae as feedstock. The project explored technical feasibility, environmental benefits, and the economic potential of alternative fuels as part of regional climate strategies.
07
REDEC – The International Conference on Renewable Energy for Developing Countries (2012–2025)
Organized by ALMEE, REDEC has become a recognized scientific forum for global experts to present and publish research in renewable energy, efficiency, and sustainability. Selected papers are indexed in the IEEE Xplore Digital Library, strengthening Lebanon’s scientific footprint in the global research community.
08
Energy Efficiency in Buildings (PEEC Project – FFEM/France)
This bilateral project demonstrated the technical and economic feasibility of energy efficiency upgrades in residential buildings. Findings informed national policy design and capacity-building programs for engineers and municipalities.
Impact and Vision
Through its Research and Development work, ALMEE fosters innovation, scientific collaboration, and practical solutions that accelerate the ecological transition. The association serves as a bridge between research, policy, and implementation, ensuring that technological advancements translate into tangible environmental and social benefits. ALMEE’s vision for R&D is to position Lebanon and the Mediterranean region as leaders in applied energy and environmental innovation, driving sustainable growth and resilience in a rapidly changing world.
