Sustainable Mobility
ALMEE actively promotes sustainable mobility as a key pillar of Lebanon’s ecological transition and energy strategy. Recognizing that the transport sector is one of the largest contributors to greenhouse gas emissions and urban air pollution, ALMEE works to develop cleaner, safer, and more efficient mobility systems that reduce environmental impacts while improving accessibility and quality of life.
ALMEE’s efforts focus on supporting municipalities and public authorities in designing and implementing low-carbon transportation strategies, integrating renewable energy and energy efficiency solutions into transport systems, and raising public awareness on the importance of sustainable travel behaviors.
Through its initiatives, ALMEE helps communities and local authorities design, implement, and manage integrated waste management systems, guided by circular economy principles where materials are reused, resources are preserved, and waste becomes a valuable input for new cycles of production.
Key priorities include:
ALMEE’s approach is holistic and participatory — empowering communities to become key actors in the fight against climate change, while ensuring that environmental sustainability also creates economic opportunities, green jobs, and social well-being.
01
Convention with ADEME (2022–2024)
As part of ALMEE’s long-standing cooperation with ADEME (France), this project includes the development of a roadmap for sustainable mobility in Lebanon. It aims to provide municipalities and local authorities with tools and frameworks to promote clean transport modes, reduce emissions, and enhance energy efficiency in the mobility sector.
02
SOCLE Project (2018–2021)
Funded by AFD and Région Pays de la Loire, the SOCLE project strengthened the capacity of Lebanese municipalities to address environmental issues, including urban mobility challenges. ALMEE’s contribution involved training municipal teams to design environmentally friendly transport policies and pilot actions that integrate sustainability principles into urban planning.
03
Awareness Campaigns on Sustainable Transport (ADEME/ALMEE Partnership)
Over the years, ALMEE and ADEME have conducted national awareness campaigns promoting sustainable transportation, carpooling, and alternative mobility options. These initiatives helped raise public consciousness on reducing the use of fossil-fuel vehicles and encouraged local solutions to mobility challenges
04
CleanerTec Project – Toward Clean Energy Technologies and Innovative Environmental Solutions in Lebanon (EU)
Implemented with COSV, this EU-funded project promotes renewable and clean energy technologies, including their integration in municipal infrastructure and transportation systems. ALMEE provided expertise in energy efficiency measures and municipal-level planning, laying the groundwork for more sustainable urban mobility practices.
05
National Training and Capacity Building for Transport Energy Efficiency (Various Programs)
ALMEE has organized multiple training workshops and technical sessions to build the capacity of engineers, municipal staff, and planners on transport energy auditing, mobility management, and policy design for low-carbon transport systems.
Impact and Vision
Through its work in Sustainable Mobility, ALMEE is helping Lebanon and Mediterranean partners rethink transportation as a driver of both environmental and economic transformation. By promoting electric mobility, renewable-powered transport, and smart urban mobility planning, ALMEE contributes to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, improving air quality, and enhancing the livability of cities. ALMEE envisions a future where mobility in Lebanon is clean, efficient, and inclusive — a system where walking, cycling, shared, and electric transportation options become the norm rather than the exception.
